Episode 48: Into the Hollywood Sky

The Greenwich Village record store, Rebel Rebel, where I found Wolfington's American Dreamsicle

For the past two months, music has seemed so fresh to me. It’s as if I’m hearing many records for the first time, even if they are old favorites. I can’t really explain why this is, but it is truly welcome. It is a little insane, though, because albums by everyone from Buffalo Springfield to Kitchens of Distinction have all sounded new to me! Obviously, I can distinguish between recordings made in different decades; it’s just that they have all sound so fresh.

This is especially wild when it comes to the new record by The Innocence Mission released last week. The band’s sound has remained ridiculously consistent through the years, with Karen’s hushed singing and Don’s reverb-laden, jazzy licks, and this album is no different. Yet, for some reason, it feels incredibly robust and new.

Anyway, hope you like this week’s selection.

  1. The Leaves Lift High – The Innocence Mission (My Room in the Trees/Badman/2010)
  2. All the Weather – The Innocence Mission (My Room in the Trees/Badman/2010)
  3. Wild Eyes – Vivian Girls (Vivian Girls/In The Red/2008)
  4. Aias – Aias (Aias 7″/Captured Tracks/2010)
  5. Ghost Rider – Suicide (Suicide/Mute/1977)
  6. Rainbows – John Wolfington (American Dreamsicle/2007)
